Exactly where does her authority end and my autonomy begin? Am I really my own boss?

Usually, the director made the new orientation packets and did the orientation w/the recruit; however, you can do it once you learn to do so. The director usually has unit information in the packets. Many a director will insist on doing the orientations for you - ESPECIALLY the inventory part. If you have a director focused on getting the big inventories w/in 24 hrs of signing a recruit, you bet she'll be there to get the most out of the recruit.
There is no "rule" about orientation and who presents it. I am sure it's a director choice what she has the unit members do - but even at that, it's only a "preference" on her part as these women, unbeknowest (sp?) to them, DO NOT have control over you as an "independent contractor". So, when you feel comfortable doing your own orientations for your new recruits to include presenting initial inventory fully explaining they have 2 months to decide and should gain some insight as to what they will really need before they order (or better yet, teach them to SELL, then order!) then you have every right to do so w/o interference.
But, do remember that these recruits will be part of your director's unit and they will claim ownership.
