I have recently begun my Mary Kay business and am delighted and dismayed to read the differing opinions. Certainly each persons own experience is their own journey and cannot be indicative of what everyone will experience. My husband got laid off in July after working hard for 14 years for a major computer company. It got me thinking that if he had invested those 14 years in his own firm he would probably be doing quite well and wouldn't have to worry about layoffs. We talked about having our own side business and regardless of what business you have you have to sell a product or service. I investigated franchises, etc., but they all required expensive upfront capital. There were no guarantees of income and you still had to go out and drum up a customer base and work hard. With Mary Kay, I knew that my potential customer base was anybody who washed their face, took a bath, wore makeup, bought gifts for family members and/or liked to smell good. I don't know of one person who does not fall into any of those categories.

I did start with an inventory for 2 reasons. First, my husband's severance package skewed our income upward for the year, we knew that we needed the tax deduction that our own business could provide. I am also able to write-off a portion of my internet service, cell phone, gas mileage etc. I don't incur a lot extra expenses that I would not have incurred anyway. My own business allows me to write them off. Second, I had a feeling that having it on hand would make it easier to sell. Sure enough, I have sold things I am sure may not have sold otherwise, except that the customer was able to see and try. But this is my journey and everyone will have their own.

The bottom line in all this inventory dispute is to do what is right for you and your family. Don't get taken in by all the "free" stuff or any high-pressure talk by anyone. There are a lot of wonderful directors and consultants in MK and sometimes you have to look to find one that works. Don't give up. You deserve to be in a great unit.

With all that said, work your business. Make a daily business "to do" list and then do it. This is not get-rich-quick. MK sells great quality products. My friends that formerly bought a wonderful-performing $20 mascara at a department store are now thrilled to buy a just as wonderful-performing mascara from me for $8.50.

If you have any questions about the MK business opportunity or would like to know more about my experiences just e-mail me at www.marykay.com/LWhitenton. Good luck to all. -- LizWhitenton web search for LizWhitenton - 01 Dec 2003
