Bunny,

It seems that you have it all figured out. And yes, that is said with much sarcasm.

Best of luck to you..

Hey Rebekah,

Oh, I definitely got the sarcasm, there, but I'm a bit surprised and perplexed at your tone. I think my very point was/is that I don't have it all figured out; on the contrary, I think none of us has it all figured out, which is why I tried to open the discussion.

Maybe you've not experienced this, but I have heard and read very many touching, and often disturbing, accounts from fine people who went into Mary Kay full of hope and goodwill, who worked hard and smart, and who came out disillusioned, bewildered, and deeply disappointed in their experience with a company that most of them still, on some level, think well of, and whose products they still value and prefer. Don't the[pse people and their stories count for something? Aren't they important people, too? As important and worth listening to as others who've had better experiences? And if the answer is no, why not?

When good people regretfully leave a company they once admired, the company can only benefit from finding out why such people are not being retained.

I'm not sure why my invitation to a frank and open discussion would elicit such a seemingly mean-spirited reply from you; you seem to be a strong enthusiast for MK and for its current selling structure, so, okay, good, you would be exactly the person to detail, for any and all holding an opinion that you believe to be mistaken, just where and how they've got it wrong, and to help them to understand better.

I was prompted to start writing on this board in part because of the distressingly numerous accounts posted here and elsewhere of cases such as that of the young student whose recruiter/director pushed so hard for inventory purchase that she (the director) actually bought inventory (upwards of $1K, I believe) on her own (the director's) credit card, telling the girl (student) she could/should/was obligated to pay off the inventory charges by using a portion of her student loan (!!!!) - when I read of cases like that, and there are so, so many, I can only think that there may be something in the MK structure that, if it does not actually encourage, then certainly allows, abuses that amount to predatory practices against, as in the instance exampled, the naive and/or vulnerable. (Yes, the girl student should just put her foot down and refuse to pay, but young people don't always find it easy to stand up for themselves in the face of older or more aggressive persons. And in any case, the girl's fortitude or lack thereof does not excuse the director's unethical behavior.)

I posted my invitation to discussion out of concern: concern for anyone who has been, or is being, abused by the company and/or its representatives; concern for the good and ethical representatives whose reputations are besmirched by association; concern for those consultants and directors who, however successful, find themselves "burned out" and feel they were deceived by the recruitment process; and concern for the company itself, whose public image has been, and continues to be, badly tarnished by such instances of abuse and unethical conduct.

Incidentally, I haven't reneged on my consultant's agreement; I just want to be sure that: 1) I can be proud to say that I am associated with this company; and 2) have confidence in MK that if there are things that are wrong in its conduct of business, the company will have the right stuff, and show the right heart, for change.

As for this board, and the purposes of my part in the dicussion: cooperation, and the sharing of ideas and experience, always seems a necessary first step to real progress.
