I called up one of the numbers I had for International Magazine Service (IMS) and asked what company I had reached. I was told it was the International Readers League
.
I asked was this the same as IMS and was told, yes, and they had merged with International Readers League
.
In further conversation, I was advised this the reason that IMS has so many offices is that they are a franchised operation. This would explain why each IMS I asked claimed to be the home office, and I eventually learned that the franchising company was Periodical Publishers.
So who is Periodical Publishers Service Bureau (PPSB)?
They are a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Hearst Corporation Here's a description from PPSB web site at http://www.ppsb.com:
PPSB was founded in 1910 and was purchased by The Hearst Corporation in 1924. PPSB opened its Home Office in Sandusky, Ohio in 1941 and currently maintains three locations, two in Sandusky and one in New York City.
If you take a look at the PPSB dealer signin page at http://ppsb.com/Dealers/login.asp, you'll see that they use the trade names International Readers League , Community Readers Club
, and International Magazine Service
. They also operate Multimedia Newsstand
.
